Outdone by Air France?

Not to be outdone by RIM and JetBlue offering email service, Air France is taking it one step further.  In approximately 3 months, Air France will allow customers on certain test flights to use their cellphones. The official press release can be read here.

Years ago, people used to make calls from the airplane phones at exorbitant prices usually paid for by a company credit card. When I used to hear those calls they usually went something like this: "You wont believe where I'm calling from..." Admittedly that was a few years back and portable DVD players and iPods have saved us from these public dialogs.

Air France to the rescue. The official release states that the service is going to be "regulated to maintain passengers’ comfort and well-being." How that will be accomplished is not detailed. Nothing like close quarters, alcohol, crying babies and 100s of cellphones.  Lets see how the inheritors of  Rousseau's theory on political and social order hold up under the crucible of onboard cell usage. Those flights should be fun.

I think I'll curl up with my book. A real crack up. A Year in the Merde. It is funny, even if it is sort of a hoax. You can buy it here at Amazon.

Bon Voyage

I hate the whole experience of flying already. I'm not looking forward to this.

I would rather they only allow text messaging on planes. That way you can still communicate and not have to deal with 250 people all talking on their phones. Which is made worse by the fact that cell phones apparently require you to speak 20dB louder in order to be heard on the other end.
